Learn more about the causes of hair loss
and what you can do to prevent it.

Male Pattern Baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia, is the most common form of hair loss. And it happens earlier than anyone expects. In fact, 2 out of 3 guys will experience some form of MPB by the time they’re 35. Even with today’s advancements in science, there’s still no known cure. The good news? There are proven treatments that can combat the symptoms.

Genetics are the most common cause of hair loss. But don’t blame Mom. You can inherit the baldness trait from either side of your family. A recent study found that there are actually 287 genetic regions that contribute to male pattern baldness.

External factors can also play a role. Using harsh chemical dyes and relaxers can exacerbate the situation, while stress or an unbalanced diet can also lead to additional hair loss.

When it's something else

Sometimes hair loss can be a symptom of a more serious illness or nutritional deficiency. That's one of the reasons why it's so important to talk to a licensed physician about any significant shedding. They'll evaluate your medical history, as well as your hair loss, to make sure everything is okay.

Good news. There are two safe and effective formulas — minoxidil and finasteride — that are FDA-approved for preventing hair loss. Depending on whether you have a receding hairline, balding at the crown, or overall hair loss, your provider may recommend one or both of these treatments.

In addition, Keeps offers a prescription shampoo to help clear your head of any dandruff, itching, or flakiness that can prevent your hair from looking as good as possible.

Minoxidil (generic Rogaine®) is a topical treatment that’s most effective for regrowth along the top of your head and crown.

Finasteride (generic Propecia®) is a prescription pill that’s primarily used to stop further hair loss across the entirety of your head, including receding hairlines.

All drugs come with possible side effects.

A common concern with finasteride is the possible sexual side effects – like loss of libido or erectile dysfunction. During clinical trials, less than 4% (3.8% to be exact) of users experienced some form of these side effects. In most of those cases, the side effects were experienced in the beginning and resolved over time, both with and without continuing to use the drug. For more details, we recommend reading the full drug information on minoxidil and finasteride.
